St. Cuthbert's Day lunch 2016

Topics:

The inaugural St Cuthbert's Day lunch in London was held on Saturday 19th March 2016 in Notting Hill.

St Cuthbert died on 20th March 687AD, and whilst his feast day has been celebrated around that time in Durham for many years, the Alumni Association decided to help mark the 1,329th anniversary with a new annual lunch in London.

Twenty-one guests were treated to a beautiful two course lunch with wine in a private room, followed by enjoying the six nations rugby upstairs in the main bar.

The Alumni Association were also delighted to be able to help Gemma Collis, a Cuths alumna, in her fundraising efforts to get her to the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Gemma is currently 6th in the world in wheelchair fencing with the top 12 qualifying for the Games. She couldn't be with us whilst she competed in a qualifying event near Paris - finishing in a fantastic third place - but sent over a video mesage of thanks which we played on the big screen.

Money was collected through a small additional to the ticket price, as well as donations in exchange for a physical copy of the Cuthberts Chronicle (the Society's alumni magazine, which you can sign up to receive), a wedding-inspired "speech length sweepstake", and other kind donations. We raised a fantastic £169.47 with pledges for £100 more.

It was especially pleasing to hear the genuine enthusiasm about the different events the Alumni Association have in the diary and the various initiatives being run. These include graduation anniversary drinks on July 2nd, a revamped alumni reunion in Durham, and global events, as well as a push on the collection and publiciation of alumni articles and memories, and becoming fully fledged members of the 21st century with online payments!

Please find below the video shared by Gemma, and take a look at the rest of the event photos.
