London drinks - spring 2009

Topics:

On Thursday 16 April 2009, St Cuthbert's Association held London Drinks for its members. The evening event was held underneath Charing Cross Train Station, at Champagne Charlies, a traditional Ale and Port House.

The sawdust covered floors added to the cellar-esque atmosphere. Prior to the drinks, apologies were received from as far away as Sydney, New York, Israel and France. The event was a thumping success with over 100 former Cuthbertsmen attending the drinks.

The use of Facebook in promoting the event naturally drew a younger Cuthbert’s crowd, but there were still representatives of at least 5 decades of life on South Bailey. Some of the current crop of Cuthbertsmen traveled down from Durham to attend the drinks and meet alumni. Special mention must go to Henry Edwards, Captain of the Rugby Club who made a brief appearance and shared an ale with some members of the Committee despite only being in his second year at Durham. The current President and President-elect were also in attendance.

Several gallons of ale were consumed, while the wine and conversation also flowed freely. Thank you to everyone who attended, the Association will be organising more social events in the future.

The drinks marked the 60th anniversary of the Association and the Committee are confident that the enthusiasm shown at the event will provide the perfect launch-pad for the Association and Society to go from strength to strength.
